Quotable Statements

Detects short, self-contained sentences that AI engines can quote directly. More quotable statements means more chances of being cited.

Why It Matters for AI Visibility

When ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google AI Overviews answer a question, they extract specific sentences from source pages to use as citations. These cited sentences are almost always short, self-contained, and factually dense. They are the atomic unit of AI citation. If your content is all long, complex sentences or vague generalities, there is nothing for AI to grab and quote. Your page might inform the AI's general knowledge, but it will not get a direct citation or link back to your site. The difference between being a background source and a cited source often comes down to whether you have extractable sentences. Each quotable statement is a standalone fact that can answer a query without needing surrounding context. A sentence like "A CDN is a network of servers that delivers content based on user location" can answer "What is a CDN?" on its own. More quotable statements on a page means more chances of being cited across different queries. Pages with five or more quotable sentences have the highest citability.

How We Score It

Every sentence on the page is evaluated for length and pattern. Sentences must be between 4 and 30 words to qualify -- too short lacks substance, too long is hard for AI to extract cleanly. Two pattern types are checked. Definitional statements use patterns like "is," "are," "refers to," or "means" (the "X is Y" format). Specific claims contain superlatives (most, best, largest, fastest), importance markers (key, critical, essential), statistics (percentages, millions), or research references ("according to," "research shows"). Five or more quotable sentences earns a perfect 10. Three to four earns a 7. One to two earns a 4. Zero quotable sentences scores a 0. The analyzer reports each detected quotable sentence with its position and classification.

How to Improve

  • 1

Write at least one definitional sentence per section

Use the "X is Y" pattern: "A CDN is a network of servers that delivers content based on user location." Keep it under 30 words. This single sentence structure is the most commonly extracted format by ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews when answering definitional queries.

  • 2

    Include specific numbers and statistics

Sentences with data are highly quotable: "Companies using CDNs see a 40-60% reduction in load times." The analyzer detects percentages, millions/billions figures, and research attribution phrases. Pair a number with a clear claim to create a sentence AI engines want to cite.

  • 3

    Use superlatives with supporting context

"Kubernetes is the most widely adopted container orchestration platform" is quotable because it combines a definitional structure with a superlative claim. The analyzer detects words like most, best, largest, fastest, first, and only as claim signals.

  • 4

Break long sentences into shorter ones

If a sentence exceeds 30 words, it will not be counted as quotable even if it contains valuable information. Split compound sentences. "X does Y, and it also does Z" becomes two focused, quotable sentences that AI can each extract independently.

  • 5

Add "according to" citations for authority

Referencing research or data sources ("According to Gartner, 85% of enterprises will adopt cloud-native architectures by 2025") triggers the claim detection pattern and signals authority to AI engines. Sourced claims are more likely to be cited than unsourced ones.

Before & After

Before
When you think about it, there are quite a few different reasons
why companies might want to consider implementing a content
delivery network for their websites, including things like better
performance, improved reliability, and cost optimization, among
many other benefits that we will discuss in detail throughout
this article.
After
A content delivery network (CDN) is a distributed system of
servers that delivers web content based on user location. CDNs
reduce page load times by 40-60%. The most popular CDN providers
are Cloudflare, AWS CloudFront, and Fastly.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the ideal length for a quotable sentence?

Between 4 and 30 words. The practical sweet spot is 10 to 20 words -- long enough to contain a complete thought, short enough for AI to extract as a standalone citation without truncation.

Do I need both definitional statements and claims?

You need at least 5 quotable sentences of any type for a perfect score. However, having both types gives you broader coverage. Definitions match "What is X?" queries while claims with superlatives or statistics match "What is the best X?" or factual queries.

Does the analyzer check for factual accuracy?

No. The analyzer checks sentence structure and patterns, not factual correctness. It is your responsibility to ensure statistics and claims are accurate. AI engines may amplify inaccurate statements if the sentence structure is quotable.
